4 Ways Rose Water Improves the Skin and How to Make it

Rose water is a homeopathic beauty treatment that has been used for thousands of years since ancient Egypt to help women look youthful and refreshed. It’s made by simply steeping rose petals in distilled water.

Rose water has stood the test of time because of its unique skin-healing benefits. It’s a mistake to think rose water only serves to help a product smell better, because that’s not the case! Read on to discover four beauty benefits you never knew about rose water, why it can be a part of your everyday skincare routine, and how you can make it at home.

Rose water is anti-inflammatory

Rose water is revered for its soothing properties in skincare, reducing redness and calming irritation. It has been used for its ability to maintain a clear, balanced complexion, and is gentle enough for delicate skin. Additionally, rose water’s anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal for sensitive skin, helping to soothe breakouts and inflammation associated with acne and other skin issues.

Rose water is a powerful antioxidant

Free radicals are your skin’s greatest enemy – because they not only cause collagen loss, but also can trigger inflammatory acne. Free radicals are everywhere, from the sun, in our food, and even in the city air.

Topical antioxidants act as a first line of defense from this daily onslaught. Fortunately, rosewater has antioxidant properties, like vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as flavonoids, that nourish and protect the skin from free radicals.

Rose water can tone your skin

Because rose water has antimicrobial properties, it can help decongest the skin and clean out impurities.

With the pH level of around 5.5, rose water is slightly acidic, so it can gently remove excess oils and dirt without drying out your skin. A rose water toner can help balance your skin and tighten pores, while preventing the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

Rose water is anti-aging

Rose water is a mild agent that can hydrate your skin, keeping it nourished and dewy without anything heavy or extra. In addition to soothing irritated skin, it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines when applied topically. Due to its scientifically proven anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it’s a great ingredient for anti-aging skin care products.

DIY rose water at home

Are you interested in making rose water at home? Luckily, it’s super simple.

All you’ll need is 7-8 stems of fragrant organic roses, about 1.5 liters of distilled water, and a 2 oz. spray bottle.

Here are the steps:

1.    Remove the rose petals from the stems and carefully rinse them to remove any residue.

2.   Add petals to a large pot and top with enough distilled water to just cover (no more or you’ll dilute your rosewater).

3.     Over medium heat, bring the water to a simmer and cover.

4.     Let simmer for 20-30 minutes or until petals have lost their vibrant color.

5.     Remove the petals from the water with a strainer.

6.     Discard petals and place water in a glass jar to store.

7.     To make your DIY rose water facial toner, add 1-3 tablespoons (or more depending on your preference) of the pure rose water you’ve just made to your 2 oz. spray bottle and fill the remaining bottle with distilled water.

I recommend storing the rosewater in the fridge for no longer than 2 months. You can also use any remaining rose water to hydrate your hair and scalp! All you need to do is to add few drops of rose water into your shampoo or conditioner for an added boost of moisture.
